Personal electronic devices (PEDs) are portable, lightweight devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and computers. These devices are now ubiquitous in American society. Navigating this new landscape presents significant challenges. With the ubiquitous availability of personal recording and video devices integrated into nearly every aspect of personal and professional life, it becomes increasingly complicated to successfully navigate between the personal privacy of the patients and healthcare providers. As technology and social media advance, there is a lack of understanding of the implications of the public perceptions on healthcare providers. This chapter will explore the both benefits and risks that PEDs and the web-connected age present professionals in the healthcare setting. |
