Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) creates maps of critical cortical areas involved with sensorimotor and language function necessary for the safe navigation of intracranial procedures near these eloquent regions. The combination of fMRI with frameless neuronavigation allows for detailed presurgical planning as well as real-time intraoperative feedback for the surgeon approaching eloquent, noneloquent, and tumor tissue. This input is key for maximizing the surgical resection while minimizing the risk of a postoperative deficit because an increased extent of resection is linked to an improved prognosis in many brain tumors including the most common and malignant primary brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme. |
