Popis: | 2 situations were studied to determine possible correlation between estrogen receptor (ER) content of breast cancer tumors and patients response to chemotherapy. The results presented were obtained from patients in 2 clinical settings: 1) advanced disease patients treated with a variety of therapeutic modalities mainly multiple agent regimens; and 2) patients receiving postsurgical adjuvant therapy. In general the data indicated that ER status had no predictive value for response in either clinical setting. More specifically in 73 patients with disseminated disease no relationship between ER status and response to cytotoxic multiple-agent chemotherapy was observed. As of publication of this article 44 of these 73 cases have undergone extramural review with the same findings being reported. In a series of 52 patients receiving adjuvant therapy 27 were classified as failures (recurrence=failure). ER status therefore did not offer prognostic value for failure of patients treated with postsurgical adjuvant therapy. The conclusion that the prognostic value of ER data in nonhormonal therapy regimens is yet to be proven follows logically from this report confirmed by a review committee. |
