Experimental Observations of Thermal Whole Beam Self-Focusing

Popis:	The interaction of a high-power laser beam with a large underdense plasma has been studied. Spatially and temporally resolved measurements made of the interaction beam after propagating through the preformed plasma have provided the first clear experimental observation of the occurrence of thermal whole beam self-focusing in plasmas generated from solid targets. The degree of whole beam self-focusing observed appears to be consistent with a simple analytical model, and also the measured timescale for self-focusing was found to be comparable to the ion acoustic transit time across the laser beam.
