RNA trafficking provides a mechanism to steer expression of specific proteins to specific compartments of the cell and also to coordinate expression of proteins encoded by RNAs with similar trafficking pathways. Each RNA has an intrinsic intracellular trafficking pathway, determined by cis-acting trafficking signals in the RNA and trans-acting trafficking factors in the cell. RNA trafficking has been studied to advantage in oligodendrocytes because of their unique morphological features. Oligodendrocytes produce myelin in the central nervous system by extending long, thin dendrites which wrap around axons to form the myelin sheath. This morphology results in topological separation of the different subcellular compartments in the oligodendrocyte, which facilitates resolution of intracellular trafficking intermediates. |
