Popis: Fair comparison of outcomes between NICUs requires adjustment for initial risk. Birth weight, gestational age, and other risk factors do not adequately account for baseline risk. Two measures of illness severity have been recently validated: these are the Clinical Risk Index for Babies (CRIB) and the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology (SNAP). The authors review how these two scores have been applied in managed care settings and in a wide array of research applications, as well as the technical, commercial, and ethical issues involved in their use.
