Modulation techniques are hearth of the operation of the modular multilevel converters (MMC). Phase disposition (PD) pulse width modulation (PWM) method is one of the suitable modulation techniques for MMC. In this modulation technique the usage times of the submodules (SM) are not equal as well as charging and discharging times are different, so capacitor voltages are not balanced when pure PD-PWM applied to MMC. The sorting algorithm and improved PD-PWM techniques overcome this problem by SM capacitor voltage measurement. However, in the proposed swapping method, capacitor voltages are self- balanced without the need for measuring capacitor voltages by equating the SM usage time. The method is verified in simulation environment. |
