Nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, involving both chemical shift and spin-spin coupling determinations, are used to show the presence of ions in intercalation compounds of graphite created from entirely neutral molecular reagents. Specifically, the reaction of graphite with the oxidant ClF and either of the non-oxidizing halides BF3 or PF5, is shown to lead to intercalation compounds containing, respectively, BF4− or PF6−. Additionally, the 11B resonance in “C16BF4” is shown to exhibit second order quadrupolar coupling with wQ = 1.4 × 106 rad/s, a value intermediate between those of alkali metal tetrafluoroborates and BF3. |
