The alkaloid pattern of Templetonia incana has been investigated to provide data for comparison with other species of the genus Templetonia. The α-pyridone alkaloids cytisine, N-methylcytisine, anagyrine and some other quinolizidine alkaloids were found as major constituents in leaves, twigs, flowers and seeds of this plant. Other compounds that were identified include the bicyclic quinolizidine alkaloids lupinine and epilupinine and two hydroxysparteines. The absence of the ormosanine-type alkaloids which are typical constituents for other species of Templetonia, supports the idea that this species should be excluded from the genus Templetonia. The absence of tetrahydrocytisine derivatives in T. incana separates this species from T. biloba. |
