Popis: | In the decades preceding 1980, rates of tuberculosis (TB) declined globally. After the appearance of HIV, however, rates in many countries have increased markedly; now more than ever, the two epidemics are catastrophically intertwined. This article reviews the epidemiology of the epidemics, the influence of HIV on TB and vice versa, at both the subclinical and clinical levels, the treatment of TB in the HIV-infected population, the global control of TB/HIV, and TB/HIV in congregate settings. The focus is on providing an overview of these epidemics and strategies for their control, highlighting issues of interest to those in global and public health. |
