Popis: | Aquaculture producers trying to gain access to financial markets often face problems of obtaining services. This study's objective is to examine how lender characteristics influence their decision in providing an aquaculture loan. A multiwave mailed survey of agricultural lenders was conducted during 1995 that resulted in an adjusted response rate of 18.1%. Approximately 25% of the responding lenders indicated that they had awarded aquaculture loans. Smaller financial institutions were found to be more likely to grant an aquaculture loan than larger institutions. Lenders with a smaller proportion of their loan portfolio dedicated to agriculture were less likely to provide aquaculture loans. Lenders with a positive attitude toward alternative agriculture were more likely to grant aquaculture producers financial assistance. Lending institutions located within the southern part of the Appalachian region were found to be significantly more willing to grant aquacultural loans. |
