Popis: This systematic review aims to identify promising (please refer to the ‘Inference Criteria’-section for an operationalisation of this term) behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used in physical activity (PA) interventions for the reduction of substance use and the promotion of PA among people with substance use disorders (SUDs) like alcohol use disorder, methamphetamine use disorder, or cannabis use disorder. Several reviews have found mixed results for the effect of PA interventions for SUDs. Across reviews, high risk biases, poor methodologies, high attrition rates, small sample sizes and heterogeneity of interventions, samples and control conditions have been identified. Effective components of (or adjunct to) PA interventions that render treatment of SUDs effective remain unknown. A systematic review of the literature on PA interventions for SUDs facilitates the identification of active components (i.e., BCTs) that effectively alter such behaviour. The identification of key components of effective interventions may explain some of the variance across study results suggesting that effective BCTs may be associated with positive treatment effects. Moreover, results of this study could inform the design of more effective PA interventions in future investigations and treatment of SUDs.
