The main treatment outcomes of antiviral therapy consist in fibrosis regression and reduction of necroinflammation, which should be ideally evaluated by serial histological examination. However, this ideal approach based on repeated liver biopsies is often impractical, mainly because of the invasiveness of the procedure. As an alternative, elastography techniques—transient elastography (TE) above all—have been widely explored as noninvasive techniques for fibrosis assessment. Being user-friendly, safe, and rapid makes them valuable tools for the long-term monitoring of the dynamic changes in liver fibrosis. |
