The color mechanism of iron on quartz by ion implantation

Popis: In order to study the effect of iron on the color–caused mechanism of quartz, Fe ions were doped into colorless synthetic quartz by ion implantation. The UV–Vis spectrum, unit cell structure, valence state of Fe and type of O of heat–treated quartz were analyzed by UV–Vis spectrometer, X–ray diffractometer, X–ray photoelectron spectrometer and Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer. Based on the experimental results, the electronic structure and optical properties of Fe–doped α–SiO2 were calculated by the first–principles to discuss the color change mechanism of quartz after Fe doping theoretically. The study results show that the ion–implanted quartz turns yellow and pink after different heat treatment temperature, and the color–caused mechanism is related to the existence of oxygen vacancies and the valence change of Fe element.
