Popis: This discussion begins by examining the broad macro influences in the social character of the country, linking demographic and economic changes to the current and future uses of historic properties. Regional strengths and weaknesses due to population shifts provide an explanation of the status of many areas, once agricultural or industrial, but now dependent on the service sector. Preservation economics closely examines the idea of why an “obsolete” property is often endangered. In truth, these sites can be more accurately described as suffering from inattention, physical deterioration, functional inadequacy, or social and aesthetic unacceptability, all of which can be addressed and remedied. The economic arguments for continued use of properties are also linked to job creation, and savings in energy, time, transportation costs, and materials.
