The relationship of hydrocephalus (HC) and a subsequently impaired intelligence is well documented. In most of the larger follow-up studies (1) a substantially lower mean IQ is found in HC patients. Another frequent finding is the large standard deviation of IQ in this group. To illustrate this: in 117 unselected HC patients we have tested so far, a mean IQ of 76.5 is found, with a standard deviation of 26.6. The distribution of the normal population has a mean IQ of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. This large IQ-variability in HC patients suggests that a number of factors, other than HC alone, have an influence on later intelligence. |
