Review of the literature indicates that ultrasound may have deleterious effects on development but that these would occur at some indeterminate level above that used clinically. We will describe our ongoing studies which are providing quantitative data on the relationships between the intensity of exposure of the rat embryo and the effects produced. These include three series of experiments using 3.2 and 0.71 continuous wave and 2.0 MHz pulsed ultrasound to simulate doppler, therapeutic, and echographic conditions respectively. |
