Popis: The technique of inelastic electron tunneling (IET) spectroscopy has been used to study the adsorption of monolayers of propiolic acid (HCCCOOH) in thin film tunnel junctions. The molecules are introduced into Al-Al oxide-Pb junctions by an infusion method and the acid is believed to adsorb on the oxide surface as a carboxylate anion. It is also found that surface catalyzed hydrogenation of the acetylenic group occurs over a time scale of several days at room temperature and the resulting adsorbed molecules are identified as adsorbed acrylic acid (H2C=CHCOOH). Surface catalyzed deuteration of the acetylenic group is also found to occur during the adsorbtion process. The identification of these molecules is provided by analysis of the measured IET spectra in a manner analogous to IR and Raman spectroscopy. The experiments demonstrate that surface catalysis of chemical reactions can be studied by the method of IET spectroscopy.
