CBT relies on the assumption that how people think impacts how they feel and how they behave. How an individual behaves in turn impacts on the individual’s thoughts and feelings. Individuals can develop maladaptive thinking processes that can cause negative automatic thoughts (NATS). These are influenced by our early life experiences and the beliefs we form about our self, others and the world. Individuals can believe NATs are facts, and CBT aims to consider evidence for thoughts, to understand how accurate the perception and thought process is. CBT encourages the idea of changing the behaviours and experimenting with this change, to create further evidence to understand the thoughts. It is important to consider the wider support around the child and young person. CBT should include the involvement of parents and the school, where possible. |
