The root-producing meristem of Isoetes andicola (E. Amstutz) L. D. Gomez originates between the first and second roots shortly after the production of the second root, just as in other species of this genus. Additional roots are produced at the lower end of the corm. However, eventually one or more ends of the basal root-producing meristem advance upward along the side of the stele, giving rise to the lateral root-producing meristem. The demonstration that the transition from basal to lateral root production occurs in the ontogeny of each individual strongly supports the combination of Stylites E. Amstutz with Isoetes L. |
