Temefos (= AbateR = o, o, o', o'-tetramethyl o, o'-thiodi-p-phenylene phosphorothioate), added to the medium at a concentration of 9.12 ppm killed 50 % of Uca pugnax S. I. Smith tested in the laboratory after 24 hours. However, a concentration of only 4.31 ppm either killed or eliminated the escape response of 50 % of Uca pugnax tested. The latter data represent the effective mortality since escape behavior determines the survival of this species. Comparisons of effective concentrations to lethal concentrations are presented as a general quantitative measure of sublethal sensitivity to a toxicant. |
