Popis: | In his Modern series of the late 1960s, Roy Lichtenstein abandoned the comic book imagery that established his reputation, turning instead to motifs drawn from the popularized modernism of 1930s art deco. Lichtenstein’s appropriation of Machine Age design was fundamentally ironic: this work recognized that the era that had produced both modernist and industrial culture was now obsolete. Rather than envisioning an aesthetic that transcended modernism, Lichtenstein's Modern paintings rehearse a defunct modernist iconography as if to suggest that, in the present, the future cannot be envisioned. |
