Popis: Laser spark emission spectroscopy is used to characterize individual coal particles in flowing environments. A high-energy, pulsed Nd:YAG laser is employed to rapidly heat particles forming an ionized plasma. After a delay of 1μs, most of the atomic species are in the neutrak or singly ionized state, and their characteristic line emission spectra are detected by using a spectrometer equipped with a time-gated diode-array detector. Nearly all of the inorganic constituents present in coal above a concentration of 100ppm are observed in the laser spark emission from single particles. Several aspects of the technique are discussed: (1) the plasma excitation process; (2) experimental intensities and methods of calculating elemental composition; and (3) the comparison of particle-by-particle results with average bulk chemical analyses and scanning electron microscopy data
