Popis:	The synthesis of silica, alumina and zirconia by the sol-gel process is described. In each case, the reagent is the appropriate metal alkoxide. The preparations for supported oxides, where the gel is attached to a rigid support, and unsupported oxides are compared because of the importance of both forms as membrane materials.
