Popis: | Objective To determine whether synthetic human calcitonin is a safe and effective treatment for hypercalcemia of malignancy. Data Sources Journal articles published between 1978 and 1992; manufacturers’ package inserts. Study Selection Articles containing pertinent information concerning the therapeutic use and effects of calcitonin products, particularly those of salmon or human origin. Data Extraction Resources were evaluated independently by the authors and information was collaboratively extracted. Data Synthesis No studies could be located comparing human calcitonin with salmon calcitonin in the treatment of hypercalcemia. Two studies found human calcitonin to be effective for this indication. Conclusions Human calcitonin cannot be recommended over the salmon product in the treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy until additional comparative studies have been performed. |
