Popis: A dynamic numerical modeling analysis was performed to evaluate an innovative remediation design on a series of high hazard earth dams, located in the Pacific Northwest. The initial seismic evaluations indicated that the dams would likely fail due to liquefaction, and required remediation. An seismic mitigation buttress design was selected to confine the liquefiable soil on the downstream side of the dams, and allowing the upstream slopes to deform during the earthquake. However, the challenge was to design to a level of confidence that the amount of upstream deformation would remain within tolerable limits so that the dams would not fail. With the aid of FLAC program, an dynamic numerical modeling analysis was performed to evaluate the buttress and the upstream slope deformation by simulating the design earthquake and applying a soil liquefaction dynamic model. A comparison study was made between the FLAC analysis and the simplified approaches.
