Hope has been acknowledged as a great virtue for individuals in general. A better understanding of its functioning will benefit well-being engendering practices. This study investigated emotion regulation ability as explanatory mechanism in the association between Snyder’s trait hope and well-being. Structural equation modelling with cross-sectional data from 579 undergraduate students highlighted the differential functioning of the two hope components (agency and pathways). Results showed a positive indirect path from hope through emotion regulation to life satisfaction only for the pathways component. The remaining direct path from hope to life satisfaction was strongly positive for the agency component whereas negative for the pathways component. The model emphasizes the importance of agency thinking, and suggests that pathways thinking favours well-being by allowing for better regulation of one’s emotions in stressful situations. |
