A pioneer of proportionate giving : a brief memoir of the Rev. E[dwin]. A[rthur]. Watkins, by the Rev. James Silvester, M.A., F.R. Hist. Soc. 1912 can be inferred as the publication date: on page 16 the pamphlet is signed off by ‘J.S.’ on 16th November, 1912. A further note on the same page states that the biography was produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Proportionate-Giving Union which was founded by Rev. Watkins on 17th of September 1887. Watkins was born on the 17th of March 1827, and trained for the Christian ministry at the C.M.S. College at Islington. He became Bishop of London in December 1851, and was a proponent of ‘proportionate giving’ to the church by its members, which eventually resulted in his establishing the Proportionate-Giving Union in 1887. He died on the 24th of October 1907. Original blue paper covers are present; printed in black and featuring a photograph of Rev. Watkinson on the front, and with an advertisement for the Proportionate-Giving Union on the inside of the back; the entire is bound in red library binding, and lettered in gold on the front: ‘Memoir of the Rev. E.A. Watkins’. |
