Popis: 1. Foliar sprays of maleic hydrazide and 2,4-D, used alone and in combination, caused significant changes in the relative quantities of free amino acids in sugar beets without significant qualitative change. 2. Treatment with maleic hydrazide in 1951 resulted in a significant increase in the relative quantities of certain free amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine, and gamma amino butyric acid) of sugar beet roots when applied at both 3 and 6 pounds per acre 33 days before harvest. The 3-pound rate caused the greater increase. 3. Treatment with maleic hydrazide at 6 pounds per acre in 1952 resulted in a relative decrease in glutamine, alanine, lysine, and tyrosine (spot 3) in roots 5 days after application. In roots sampled 60 days after such foliar sprays, there were relatively significant increases in the same acids as compared with untreated controls. 4. The application of 2,4-D in 1952 resulted in a relative decrease in glutamine, alanine, lysine, and tryosine in roots at 5 days after spraying. At ...
