Popis: | Although the house cricket, Acheta domestica (L.), is a satisfactory laboratory animal for nutritional studies, it failed to grow when fed a syntype diet which had supported growth and reproduction in the cockroach, Blattella germanica . When fed dried grass, its growth rate was considerably less than that obtained when the grass and diet were fed together. This report concerns the factor in the diet which supplemented grass. The mineral mix of the syntype diet was shown to be active, and sodium was found to be the missing factor. Chloride, phosphate, and carbonate salts of sodium were active. Sodium could be supplied effectively in the food, water, or floor material. |
