Popis: We argue overcoming the reticence induced by the wartime (WW1) expulsion and extermination of Anatolia’s Christians is necessary for a correct assessment of Turkey’s developmental performance. To this effect we investigate the drivers of pre-WWI commercial agriculture in Turkey using the best available district level population, production and credit information. We present evidence supportive of the literature on long run determinants of growth. Namely early transition to settled agriculture as well as technology adoption differences at the intensive margin matters. We discuss how the Ottoman institutional reforms of the 19th century impacted agricultural performance both directly and indirectly. We show how insights drawn from the asymmetric information and contract enforcement literatures can be utilized to evaluate that impact. We relate Ottoman Turkey’s experience to the wider Middle East and offer some counterfactual thoughts to evaluate that experience.
