Popis: The adsorption kinetics for three cationic polyelectrolytes onto cellulosic fibers has been determined in turbulent flow. Two cationic polyacrylamides of high molecular weight (>106) that had been labeled by a fluorescent group and by tritiation, respectively, were used together with a medium molecular weight dimethyldiallylammonium chloride polymer. The latter polymer was analyzed by polyelectrolyte titration. An adsorption level of a few hundred μg polymer per g of pulp was established in all cases in less than 1 s. This initial level is much lower than the equilibrium adsorbed amount and corresponds roughly to a monolayer of polymer molecules having the same conformation as in solution.
