ICRF heating experiments have been carried out on the stellarator W7-AS using a single broad antenna on the high field side. This antenna launches a narrow k∥-spectrum for π-phasing. Bulk plasma heating of electrons and ions succeeded for 2nd harmonic heating of hydrogen and two-ion hybrid heating of hydrogen in deuterium without a concurrent increase in impurity radiation or plasma density. For sufficiently low hydrogen concentration the plasma could be sustained with ICRF alone under close to steady-state conditions for shot lengths typical of W7-AS. |
