Spatial phase-shifting interferometry for measurement of aero-optical effects

Popis: Interferometry has long been used to visualize the gas density distribution that results from aerodynamic phenomena. This paper describes an interferometer system that produces quantitative data. The resulting phase maps are high resolution and high accuracy images that are obtained from a single 8 ns laser pulse. A standard Mach-Zehnder interferometer is aligned so that there is approximately Lambda/4 of tilt per pixel. The technique is the spatial equivalent of phase-shifting interferometry. The raw phase maps are calculated and displayed in real time using an image processor. Results are presented from a Mach 3.5 projectile traveling through air. 7 refs.
