This chapter aims to analyze the strategies for tackling poverty among young people. It presents the report of two qualitative investigations developed with young people living in poverty in the Northeast of Brazil. Poverty imposes its risks on the development of young people when it exposes them to situations of deprivation, abandonment, and aggression. They are residents of territories doubly stigmatized by poverty and violence. The categories of fatalism and protagonism are described as strategies to confront poverty, anchored in the ways of life available to poor youth. The protagonism, which must be reinvented, demonstrates the capacity of this group to choose what are their interests and needs. It is possible to point out that poor young people who renew their protagonism in their daily lives produce new meanings about their ways of life. |
