This article aims to understand the twin influences of having a calling and conscientiousness on workers’ regulatory focus as they aim to make the best possible decisions in dangerous situations. Drawing from bounded rationality, we argue that a calling may create a cognitive bias that promotes an emphasis on risk-taking, and that the degrees to which workers are conscientious as individuals will either enhance or reduce this bias. We will test our theory using structural equation modeling with time-lagged, survey data collected from 250 Americans and British police and military personnel. |
