Popis: | This study addresses how minority language newspapers develop a positive sense of psychological distinctiveness between the minority and the majority language groups in bilingual settings. The research builds on qualitative interviews conducted with journalists of four minority language dailies: Dolomiten (a German daily in Italy), Haromszek (a Hungarian daily in Romania), Vasabladet and Hufvudstadsbladet (Swedish dailies in Finland). Two main themes were identified: perceived differences between the minority language and majority language newspapers, and attitudes toward approaching the majority language speaking audience. The operation of the newspapers was labeled with different identity management strategies such as competition, creativity, and mobility. |
