Popis: Due to the ubiquitous occurrence of heavy oil reserves throughout the world, and the fact that these reserves are becoming an increasingly important source of new petroleum supply, it is important to understand the seismic response of these reservoirs. Although several authors have addressed this problem, the equations shown in their papers are given in different formulations which make a physical understanding of the techniques quite difficult. In this paper, we present a formulation which unifies the notation in these studies and shows how their implementations are equivalent. We then compute the frequency-dependent real and imaginary parts of the complex shear modulus from knowledge of the viscosity and temperature of the heavy oil, for a heavy oil example published in the literature. This also allows us to compute the attenuation curves for heavy oil.
