Popis: Modeled after a recent study by Byrne, Willis, Peters, Kunkel, and Tibbett (2019), we examined the relationship between depressed affect and decision making in a pilot study. We used the Cups task (Levin & Hart, 2003) in our within-subjects design to compare differences to gains and losses (“the framing effect”) and sensitivity to expected value among depressed individuals. Our pilot study revealed a positive correlation between depressed affect and risk aversion in the frame of losses but not gains. Hooke and Page (2002) found that locus of control (LOC) could predict cognitive behavioral therapy efficacy for depression; psychiatric patients with an external LOC showed the least improvement. The present study aims to examine LOC as a moderator in the relationship between depressed affect and risk taking. Identifying the role of LOC in decision making may help to guide treatment interventions.
