Popis: The present study was aimed at investigating the influence of differently composed oral contraceptives on plasma lipid and apolipoprotein levels with respect to apolipoprotein E polymorphism. Women received either monophasic preparations containing ethinylestradiol/desogestrel (n = 23), ethinylestradiol/gestodene (n = 21) or a triphasic preparation (n = 15) containing ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel. Analysis was performed before and after 3 months on oral contraception. Whereas plasma cholesterol levels and cholesterol levels in lipoprotein subfractions, apolipoprotein A-IV and B did not change, significant increases in plasma triglycerides, apolipoprotein A-I and A-II were observed partially depending on the progestin additive. In contrast, all three different contraceptives led to a significant decrease in plasma apolipoprotein E concentrations. The mean decrease of apolipoprotein E with respect to the apo E phenotpye was 15% for apo E 3/3 and 21% for apo E 3/2 phenotypes, respectively.
