In October 2018 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out archaeological monitoring during groundworks on land at Kelvedon House, 86 High Street, Kelvedon, Essex CO5 9AA (NGR TL 86191 18790; Figs. 1 - 2). The monitoring was undertaken in compliance with the requirements of a planning condition attached to planning approval for the proposed construction of four flats and four dwellings (Braintree Council Planning Approval Ref.17/00076/FUL). It was required based on the advice of Historic Environment Advisor of Essex County Council (ECC HEA). An evaluation revealed six features located in the centre and south-eastern end of the site (Haygreen 2018). At the south-eastern end of the site (Trench 3), the features comprised two intercutting Roman pits (F1007 and F1009) and a possible tree hollow (F1005) and they all contained Roman (mid 1st - early 2nd century) pottery. Pit F2003 recorded during the monitoring of the footing trenches for Plots 7 and 8 contained no finds but it cut Subsoil L2001 (=L1001) suggesting it was of post-medieval or modern date. No Roman or medieval features or finds were present. |
