Can guinea pigs continue to live with the adrenal glands removed, if a high level of vitamin C is given? 2. Can guinea pigs utilize another steroid compound, natural estrogen (estrone), after adrenalectomy to maintain life? Complete adrenalectomy in guinea pigs is a difficult operation. On the right side of the body the adrenal gland adheres closely to the posterior vena cava and the gland itself is highly fragile. Apparently this operation has been successful in only a few laboratories. Simmons and Whitehead (1937) reported a method of adrenalectomy in guinea pigs that involved considerable trauma.
