Popis: In the most recent WHO recommendations of 1996 (1) it has been clearly stated that the definition of hypertension (HT) depends on diastolic and/or systolic blood pressure (BP) values. The measurement of BP using classical methods in the doctor’s surgery with a mercury manometer and using the auscultatory method remains the method of reference. This measure of BP in the surgery can be complemented in certain cases by other measurements such as recording in the patient’s home or ambulatory measures. The WHO also notes that the classification of HT still remains based on BP values but also on the extent of organic lesions and the cause of the HT. The severity of organic lesions is often correlated with the level of BP values but this is not always the case. Furthermore the rate of progression of lesions varies from one person to another in relation to many factors most of which are unknown. Therefore the BP and the organic effects should be evaluated separately. Thus study of the cardiac and vascular function and in particular, the presence of hypertrophy or remodeling in these areas should he studied.
