Popis: | Introduction: The epidemiology of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) has been described in various countries, with different outcomes and incidence depending on the race and location studied. Recent reports are limited by small sample sizes, which are not enough to make significant conclusions. The aim of the present study is to use a nationally representative database to evaluate clinical characteristics of patients with PPCM and to compare their intrahospital mortality. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that there are no significant racial disparities in hospital mortality in patients with PPCM. Methods: Retrospective analysis of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2016 to 2018. Patients with PPCM were identified using ICD10 codes and were classified by race (White, African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and other race). The primary outcome was intrahospital mortality. A multivariate regression analysis was constructed to adjust for confounders. Results: We identified a total of 9,370 patients with PPCM. Of them, 36.4% were classified as White, 42.4% as African American, 10.8% as Hispanic, 3.31% as Asian, 1.01% as Native American, and 2.83% as other race. Diabetes was more common in Native Americans, in comparison with arterial hypertension and chronic kidney disease, which were more common in African Americans (Table 1). Compared to White race, the odds of intrahospital mortality in Asian, Hispanic and African American, did not differ amongst races (Figure 1). Conclusion: African Americans continue to have more prevalence of PPCM compared to other races. In this sample, intrahospital mortality did not differ. More studies are needed to evaluate if racial disparities contribute for the observed differences in PPCM prevalence and long term outcomes. |
