Shortly following the discovery that chlorpromazine is effective as an antipsychotic agent, it became apparent that patients relapsed after they stopped taking their medication. Therefore clinicians began “maintaining” their patients on medication after their symptoms had resolved in an attempt to reduce the frequency of relapse. In this paper we will review the efficacy of maintenance neuroleptics and discuss the clinical variables which must be evaluated in designing a long-term treatment program. |
