Popis: | The midgut of members of the generaCephalobaena, Raillietiella andReighardia was investigated by light and electron microscopical means. The entire midgut showed epithelial changes according to the physiological stage of digestion and had no different physiological compartments. Five stages of digestion were differentiated. Ultrastructurally, the intestinal cells of all three genera exhibited extensive interdigitations formed by infoldings of the lateral and basal membranes. The formation of the microvillar border indicated a remarkable difference between the genera, being regular inRaillietiella andCephalobaena and regular to highly irregular and hand-like with numerous branchings inReighardia. Histochemically, acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase were detected in the intestinal cells ofReighardia. Lipids that functioned as storage products were found inReighardia and glycogen accumulation was observed inRaillietiella andCephalobaena. As in numerous other parasitic arthropods, the midgut of the investigated pentastomids reflects typical accomodations to their haematophagous mode of life. |
