Popis: | Larvae of the squash vine borer, Melittia cucurbitae (Harris), apparently monophagous on Cucurbita, can complete their growth only on specific wild and domesticated species of this genus when grown under Illinois conditions. Among the domesticated species (all of which attracted oviposition), cultivars of C. maxima Duch. and C. Pepo L. were highly suitable hosts, favored over C. mixta Pang, and C. ficifolia Bouche which were intermediate but did permit larval maturation. Cultivars of C. moschata Duch. ex Poir. were least satisfactory of the 5 cultivated species. With cultivars of this species there was little or no larval development, and larval boring occurred only into the petiole. The most preferred wild species were C. andreana Naud. and C. texana Gr. (also designated as feral species) which were equally as suitable as larval hosts as the closely related cultivated species, C. maxima and C. Pepo, respectively. Less desirable and more distantly related wild hosts which attracted some oviposition and completed larval development were C. okeechobeensis Bailey and C. ecuadorensis Cutl. and Whit. Mesophytic wild species which attracted little or no oviposition and which were unsatisfactory for larval growth were C. lundelliana Bailey, C. sororia Bailey, and C. gracilior Bailey. Xerophytic wild species, C. foetidissima HBK, C. pedatifolia Bailey, and C. palmata Wats., had no affinity for either oviposition or larval feeding. |
