Carbon is a commodity of the future. What nature has shown us since the beginning of evolution concerning to the use of the element carbon has allowed us to increasingly gain a better understanding of carbon and its uses. The transition of our awareness of the element carbon from fuel to raw material shows us the immense possibilities hidden within it. The concept to exclusively use carbon as an energy source will sooner or later be a thing of the past, but in the chemical and metallurgy industry it is not possible to give up carbon at all. In this section an overview of the history of lignite carbonization in the Lusatia region in Germany is given. Further, new developments in the production of coke, coke dust, and pyrolysis gas with high hydrogen content are presented. At the end of this section an overview to pyrolysis kinetic models is given. |
