Popis: | The primary indicators of water quality are biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, temperature, sulphide and other physico‐chemical and biological parameters. An experimental model is proposed for the classification of the New Calabar river for various beneficial uses like bathing, boating, public water supplies, fish culture and industry. Standardised sensitivity functions for the various uses are applied in the determination of the water quality index (WQI) at different seasons and tides. The results show that the river is suitable for fish culture and public water supplies. The model also classifies the river unsuitable for bathing/swimming and industrial purposes. The model is considered more relevant to our water system when compared with other existing ones. |
