Popis: For biomass to play a significant role in the conversion from fossil fuels to sustainable and renewable fuel systems, some of its properties need to be improved. Torrefaction as a pretreatment method improves many of the fuel properties. Torrefied biomass materials show superior fuel qualities with respect to logistics, handling, storage and feeding. However, the resulting fuel quality may be highly influenced by both torrefaction process conditions and raw material characteristics. An initial pilot-scale parametric study of torrefaction of a typical Nordic wood fuel was therefore performed. The torrefaction pilot plant consists of a rotating drum with an internal screw that has a hollow shaft to exactly control the residence time. Electric heaters outside of the drum give the required heat for torrefaction and the capacity of the pilot plant is up to 20 kg dry biomass per hour. The effects of all relevant fuel and process variables on over 30 different process and product responses were determined by performing the experiments according to a factorial design. The results well illustrates the effects of temperature and residence time on these responses.
